Badulla

The history of the town traces back to the mid-nineteenth century when formerly isolated villages started being used by the British to expand the plantation economy by constructing roads from Nuwara Eliya and Kandy. This city is a definite treat for nature lovers as it serves breathtaking views of Namunukula mountain ranges.

Badulla also has several attractions in store for its visitors including two ancient temples, namely Muthiyangana temple and Dhowa Rock temple. Some of the most popular tourist attractions of Badulla include the Dunhinda Falls; a 46-meter high waterfall offering a splendid view, St. Mark’s Church; a mid-17th-century wood and stones Church that marks to be one of the oldest buildings in Badulla and Demodara Nine Arch bridge; located between Demodara and Ella railway stations, this bridge sports unique architecture similar to colonial-era railway construction.

Furthermore, featuring tropical vegetation, this city is an exporting marketplace. It mostly trades fresh vegetables such as beans, carrots, broccoli, and turnip to the Middle East is also counted among one of the most prominent tea growing areas in Sri Lanka.
