Ihlara Valley

Ihlara Valley is a picturesque gorge created by the Melendiz river over thousands of years. This 14km long valley is one of the most beautiful and serene locations in Cappadocia. It used to be a favourite place among the monks for recreation, seen by the many churches along the valley’s length. It is famous for its hiking excursions.

The Kokar Kilise is adorned with loads of frescoes from the bible. The Agacalti Kilise is a church with a distinct architectural style, vibrant colours and many decorative features, making it extremely interesting. Other important churches in the valley are Purenli Seki Kilise, Egritas Kilise, Yilanli Kilise and the Kirk Dam Arti Kilise. The valley has 4 entry points, the first at the beginning in Ihlara village, the second and the busiest at around 4km into the valley, the third is halfway through and is accessible via car, and the last from the other side of the valley, the Selime Monastery.
